Clipless pedals on sale: cleat, cage and box contents

In MTB, all cleats attach with two screws, but they cannot be exchanged between brands. SPD-marked pedals, whether from Shimano or Funn, share the same cleat; TIME uses its ATAC cleats, and crankbrothers only endorses its own on its Mallet models. If your shoes already have cleats, sticking to the same system saves you a purchase. This can also distort the perception of a discount: several TIME models are sold “+ ATAC cleats,” the ME700 “with cleats,” and other pairs without them. Therefore, a pair priced lower but delivered without cleats may cost more, cleats added, than a promotional pair that includes them. The ATAC 13°/17° cleats release the foot at 13 or 17 degrees according to the side they are mounted on, and the Easy version at 10 degrees makes it easier to exit.

Flats: surface, thickness and maintenance

A flat pedal should support the full width of the sole. Is Black Friday only one day long?

Can my SPD cleats work on TIME or crankbrothers pedals?

No. Each system has its own cleat and engagement geometry: an SPD cleat is used only with SPD pedals or those advertised as compatible. Changing pedal brands therefore requires new cleats, which must be adjusted under the shoe.

Do you need special shoes for MTB clipless pedals?

Yes: a cleated sole with two holes, which receives the recessed cleat for walking. With flat pedals, a flat sole made of soft rubber grips the pins better than a regular sneaker.

How to evaluate an offer on MTB pedals?

Check that both compared pedals have the same platform size, the same axle and the same contents, including cleats, then note the final price.

Are clipless pedals suitable for beginners?
