A lock chain on Black Friday is compared on three factors: the thickness of the links, which determines its strength, the length, which decides what you can attach, and the weight you are willing to carry. This page brings together chains with built-in locks, chains that require a padlock, and plug-in chains, with strikethrough prices on many of them.
A chain of 5 to 7 mm, lightweight, is sufficient for daytime stopping in a busy place. For a valuable bike parked outside for a long time, aim for 10 mm or more, in hardened steel, even if it weighs more than a kilo and a half. The length should be chosen according to the attachment points: about one metre for the frame and one hoop, more for a tree, a wide pole or a cargo bike. Detailed advice on links and shapes can be found on the bike chain lock page, open all year round. For a more compact format, check out the foldable locks from the event.
Auvray offers its Xtrem chain in a lasso style, where one end passes through the other before being locked, and provides lighter chains, from 4 to 10 mm, like the K-Block and R-Bloc.
Kryptonite has a chain at each level of its range, from the Keeper to the New York, including the Kryptolok, either coded or keyed, and the Evolution.
Abus coats several chains in a textile sheath that protects the paint, like the IvyTex, and forges square links on the 6806K, designed to offer less grip to a bolt cutter.
Trelock differentiates its chains with locks in the BC series, whose reference provides length and section, and its ZR chains, which connect to its frame locks.
Hiplok, a British brand, has designed a chain that can be worn around the waist, with the lock serving as a belt buckle; the Lite weighs nearly half as much as the Original.
Outside the event, look for clearance items in the clearance section and recent references in the new arrivals. For a U-lock, a cable or a chain, the bike lock Black Friday page features all formats.
At least 10 mm, in hardened or cemented steel, and a lock of the same standard. Below that, a standard bolt cutter may be enough to cut through a link.
At equal weight, the U-lock often withstands better and can be stored on the frame. The chain, being more flexible, wraps around thick or irregular attachment points and more easily secures both the frame and the wheel together.
Over the shoulder, in a bag or worn around the waist for models designed for that purpose. Avoid wrapping it around the seat post or handlebars, where it swings and marks the frame.
The shank of the padlock must pass through the links and be as strong as the chain: a weaker padlock becomes the point of attack. Prefer a set provided by the manufacturer.
Yes at Vélo-Store. The Black Friday takes place on the Friday after Thanksgiving, but the discounts on anti-theft chains apply throughout the period. Set the length according to your usual attachment points before comparing two prices.
