A road bike tyre bought during Black Friday is compared reference by reference: the same name, Grand Prix 5000, P Zero Race or Power, covers several versions that are not equal. A large part of these tyres is on discount for the operation: first check the width accepted by your frame and rim, then the fitting, either with a tube or tubeless, and finally the usage.
The width is measured in millimetres from the ETRTO marking moulded on the side, 28-622 for a 700 x 28C. It depends on the space under the brake and in the stays, as well as the internal width of the rim. The mounting follows the rim: a tube tyre fits everywhere, a tubeless ready tyre requires a rim designed for tubeless and some sealant. For a hookless rim, check the list of tyres approved by the wheel manufacturer.
With the same name, align the width, mounting, bead design, and sidewall colour: a 28 mm tubeless with a beige sidewall and a 25 mm tube are not the same reference. Also check the generation, as the older Grand Prix 5000 tube and the newer 5000 S TR coexist in the selection. Tyres are most commonly sold individually: for a bike, count two, and keep the same model at the front and back for consistent handling. Each variant has its own price: the discount displayed on a 25 mm tube doesn’t indicate the price of the 28 mm tubeless that shares the same name.
Outside of sales, the page for road bike tyres details widths, compounds, and pressures throughout the year. During Black Friday, a new tyre can be fitted with a road inner tube or, if tubeless, sealed using a reservoir pump from pumps and repair accessories; if the rim is marked, see the road wheels. The practical tyres and MTB tyres from the sale serve other bikes, and the clearance sales will follow after.
Vittoria combines graphene and silica in its G2.0 compounds, from the training Rubino to the Corsa Pro for racing, available in standard or Speed versions.
Goodyear offers the Eagle F1 and its SuperSport variant in three mount types: Tube Type with tube, Tubeless Ready, and Tubeless Complete.
Continental reserves the TR designation for its tubeless ready tyres: the Grand Prix 5000 S TR is the racing version, while the All Season TR is for winter outings.
Panaracer, a Japanese manufacturer, offers its Agilest in Duro, with double puncture protection, and in Light, without side protection for greater flexibility.
Pirelli manufactures its P Zero Race TLR at its plant in Bollate, near Milan, except for the SL version.
Michelin categorises its racing, winter, and time trial road tyres under the name Power.
The 28 mm fits most recent bikes: at the correct pressure, it offers more comfort without significant loss of efficiency. The 25 mm remains useful on a narrow frame or brake calliper. In all cases, check the wheel clearance before changing size.
There is no single value: it depends on your weight, the mount, and the condition of the road. A 28 mm is inflated less than a 25 mm, and a tubeless less than a tube tyre. Start with the manufacturer's calculator and stay within the range indicated on the sidewall and the rim.
To ride from autumn to spring, an all-season version, such as the Grand Prix 5000 All Season, the Power All Season, or the P Zero Race 4S, grips better on cold and wet roads and is more resistant to cuts, at the cost of a few grams.
Yes: slipping a tube into a tubeless ready tyre is a classic roadside fix. First remove the tubeless valve, wipe off the liquid, and look for the thorn that’s still in the carcass.
The name refers to a single Friday, the one after Thanksgiving; however, for road tyres, Vélo-Store extends its discounts throughout November. This is a good time to fit all-season tyres before winter, or to replace both front and rear at once.
