During Black Friday, discounts apply to bike brake discs from 140 mm for road bikes to 223 mm for downhill, in 6-bolt or Center Lock fitting. To ensure a correct discount, check the fitting of your hub, the diameter permitted by your frame and fork, and the thickness specified by your caliper: these three measurements determine compatibility.
Two situations arise. If your disc is worn, warped, or discoloured from heat: replacing it with an identical one, with the same diameter and mounting, is the safest choice. If you want more power or heat resistance, whether in the mountains or on an electric bike: you might consider a larger or better-ventilated disc, if the frame and fork allow it, along with the corresponding caliper adapter.
A promotion is initially understood through its packaging: a single disc, a pair, or a box of ten for the workshop, each having crossed-out prices that do not originate from the same base. Then check the product sheet to see what is included: screws for a 6-bolt disc, a locking ring for a Center Lock, which some offers exclude. Only compare identical constructions: a solid steel disc, a two-piece disc with a riveted track on an aluminium support, or a floating disc. Finally, some discs only accept resin pads: check this before pairing them with metal pads.
The bike brake disc page details wear, mountings, and diameters all year round. Pair a new disc with suitable pads in Black Friday for your caliper; caliper adapters and bleed kits are among the braking parts on offer, while complete disc brakes have their own page. Clearance items then go to clearance; new discs arrive in the new arrivals.
Shimano offers its 6-bolt disc individually or in tens and specifies, for its Center Lock like the RT-MT800, whether the supplied ring has internal or external splines.
Galfer features its wavy Wave track in road and mountain bike versions, floating or not, with six screws or Center Lock, alongside the Shark.
Brake Authority, the French brand of downhill rider Fabien Barel, offers its Burly and Aggressive discs in 160, 180, and 185 mm.
Sram points out the important details with the reference: included steel screws, ring not included, and rounded edge, on its Centerline, Paceline, and HS2.
TRP sells several discs in pairs and designs its RS01E of 2.3 mm thick, up to 223 mm, for its own calipers.
Jagwire separates its Sport SR1 range, in 6 bolts from 140 to 203 mm, from its Pro LR2 range, either in 6 bolts or Center Lock.
Often, as long as the diameter, mounting, and thickness match the caliper. However, some brands reserve their thick discs for their own brakes: the manufacturer's specification is paramount.
The solid one, made of a single piece of steel, is simple and robust. The floating disc or two-piece design rives a steel track onto a lighter support and handles long braking better, at the cost of a more complex construction.
Measure the thickness of the track with calipers and compare it to the minimum engraved on the disc or provided by the brand, 1.8 mm for example for a TRP disc of 2.3 mm. A crack or persistent warping also necessitates replacement.
It is recommended: worn pads have conformed to the old track and wear badly on a new disc. After installation, bed in the whole setup with a series of gradual braking.
The Black Friday revolves around the Friday following Thanksgiving, and Vélo-Store extends its discounts on brake discs throughout November. Before ordering, note the mounting and diameter of your current disc as well as the thickness specified by your caliper; for a larger disc, make sure to get the corresponding caliper adapter.
