Black Friday BMX: race and freestyle discounts

The Black Friday BMX from Vélo-Store gathers in six sections the rider's gear and bike parts: helmets, equipment, drivetrain, braking, wheels and tyres, peripheral components. Its discounts cover both the track and the skatepark, from the full face to the sprocket: first check the rim diameter, the standard of each part and, for a child, the Mini or Junior size.

What does Black Friday BMX cover?

BMX includes two practices with different needs. In racing, riders launch from a starting hill on a track with bumps and banked turns, using a lightweight single-speed bike. In freestyle, whether in a park, on the street, or on dirt jumps, the bike needs to handle jumps and landings. During Black Friday, this section brings together offers related to both practices, categorised just like on the BMX page of the site: what the rider wears on one side, what is mounted on the bike on the other.

Helmets and gear: equipping for the track or skatepark

The BMX helmets from Black Friday include full-face helmets for adults and kids, and bowl helmets for freestyle. The BMX equipment section leads to jerseys, pants, and shorts for riders, as well as long gloves.

To compete, the gear must comply with the BMX Racing federal regulations: full-face monocoque helmet with a visor at least 10 cm long, jersey with sleeves down to the wrists, gloves covering the fingers up to the tips, and pants designed for BMX, motocross, or downhill. Road jerseys and jogging pants are not permitted. A range available in both jersey and pants, such as the Rayce by Fly Racing, makes matching an outfit easier.

Bike parts, section by section

  • BMX peripheral components include the cockpit and contact points: forks, handlebars, number plates, grips, stems, pedals, seats, seat posts, and pegs.
  • BMX transmission goes to the essential of a single-speed bike: chainrings, sprockets, chains, and freewheels.
  • BMX wheels are sold individually or in pairs, in racing and freestyle versions.
  • BMX braking includes brake calipers and cables.

Race or freestyle: the standards to know before buying

  • Rim diameter: most BMX bikes run on 20 inches, but there are two rim diameters. Thin tires of 1-1/8 or 1-3/8 inches fit rims of 451 mm (ETRTO standard), while tires of 1.5 inches and more fit rims of 406 mm. Cruisers, on the other hand, use 24 inches.
  • Rear hub: in freestyle, a cassette hub transmits power without dead time, while a freecoaster hub allows for backwards riding with stationary pedals. The LHD or RHD designation indicates which side the chain runs.
  • Transmission: one chainring at the front, one sprocket at the back, and a half-inch pitch chain, often 1/8 inch wide for freestyle and usually 3/32 for racing; the chainring, sprocket, and chain must be of the same width. The ratio of their tooth counts determines the gearing.
  • Pegs: they attach to the axle, which usually has a diameter of 14 mm that must match their bore size.
  • Brakes: in competition, a hand-actuated rear brake is mandatory while a front brake is prohibited.

Comparing two BMX discounts without getting it wrong

A discount on a BMX part only applies to the exact version displayed on the product page: stems and seats Mini or Junior for young riders, Pro for adults, Mini/Expert wheels on 451 mm rims alongside 406 mm wheels. Before comparing two crossed-out prices, check the number of holes in the rim, 28 or 36, the tooth count of a chainring, the diameter of the seat post, and the height of a handlebar: two promotions listed under the same name may not necessarily apply to the same part. The anodised colour is chosen last, once compatibility is ensured.

The other Black Friday pages

On the main Black Friday page, the event also covers MTB, road, and urban bikes. The cyclist's equipment offers locks and electronics for all bikes, and the spare parts are sorted by function. Outside of this event, clearance items go to clearance, and new arrivals showcase the latest references.

Frequently asked questions

In 20 or 24 inches: which wheel for your BMX?

The standard BMX runs on 20 inches; the cruiser, a separate category in competition, runs on 24-inch wheels. The federal regulation allows for smaller wheels for children up to six years old. Before ordering a wheel or tire, check the rim diameter, 406 or 451 mm, marked on the side of the current tire.

When do Black Friday discounts on BMX take place?

Around the day after Thanksgiving, the American holiday celebrated on a Thursday, which gives its Friday to Black Friday. On Vélo-Store, BMX promotions are not limited to that day and extend throughout November, giving you time to check the rim diameter or chain width of your bike.

What gear for a first BMX race?

A full-face helmet with a visor, a long-sleeved jersey, long gloves, and pants specific to BMX, motocross, or downhill, along with well-secured shoes. Jeans are tolerated in regional and departmental events, except for Elite riders.

Are clipless pedals allowed in BMX racing?

They are allowed in competition starting from the U15 category, which is from age 13; younger riders use flat pedals. Toe clips and straps are banned for all riders.

How to equip a young rider?

Choose parts suited to their size instead of anticipating their growth: Mini or Junior stem and seat, a shorter handlebar, a full-face helmet adjusted to their current head size. Wheels marked Mini/Expert are designed for bikes in these categories.
