A discounted bike chainring Black Friday will only be useful if it matches your crankset's mounting, spacing and arms or direct mount, its position and the number of speeds of your chain. The discounts apply to road, mountain bike, gravel and track chainrings, both round and oval, as well as chainrings for electric bike motors; Vélo-Store will keep these promotions throughout November.
The name of a chainring sums up the essentials. The number of teeth, noted as 50T or 50D. The attachment: number of arms and distance between the bolts, 110, 104 or 130 mm for example, or mentions Direct Mount when the chainring attaches directly to the crank. The targeted crank model, like FC-R7000 or R9200 from Shimano. The number of speeds, 10V, 11V or 12 speeds, which determines the spacing and profile of the teeth. If any of these specifications differ from your current chainring, the offer does not apply to you.
The round chainring remains the standard. The oval chainring has a larger diameter during the push phase and a smaller diameter at dead spots, allowing for a smoother rotation; its orientation on the crank matters and is adjustable according to the manufacturer's markers. The alternating tooth profile, known as Narrow Wide, alternates between narrow and wide teeth to hold the chain without a front derailleur: it is used on single chainrings for mountain bikes and gravel bikes. On a double chainring setup, the outer chainring features ramps and pins that lift the chain: it does not interchange with the inner one.
When the motor is housed in the crankset, the chainring mounts directly to it, either directly or on a spider, with an interface specific to each brand and generation: Bosch, Yamaha, Shimano EP8, TQ or Fazua. Some add a cover to protect your trousers; also check the chain line indicated. Changing a chainring does not alter the motor's assistance limit, and any untethering remains prohibited.
A 50-tooth chainring for 110 mm and its twin with 52 teeth are not the same part: compare the crossed-out price to the displayed price based on the teeth count, the spacing, and the position that concerns you, with the product sheet for support. With equal teeth counts, check the material, 7075 aluminium, steel for wear chainrings for e-bikes, or carbon, and what is included, chainring bolts or spacers. The promotional pages by practice refine the search: road chainrings in Black Friday, mountain bike chainrings and city bike chainrings. For a complete replacement, see the cranksets in Black Friday; the rest of the year, the bike chainrings page details each standard and the clearance section gathers replaced references.
Shimano sells each chainring of its road cranksets separately, 105, Ultegra and Dura-Ace, and gravel GRX, naming the original crankset in the reference.
E*Thirteen sizes its E*Spec chainrings for direct mount on electric mountain bike motors, Shimano EP8, TQ HPR50 or Fazua Ride 60, with a steel version and chain line spacer for the Bosch CX.
Stronglight produces chainrings for Bosch motors in direct mount, in Narrow Wide profile, in addition to its replacement chainrings for Shimano Ultegra and Dura-Ace.
Sram mounts single-piece double chainrings on its AXS road cranksets, like the 50-37 of the Red, with a Force E1 version integrating a power meter.
O.Symetric, a French brand of non-circular chainrings designed by engineer Jean-Louis Talo, has equipped Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome during their victories at the Tour de France; its four-armed chainrings target the Dura-Ace.
Miche covers the track with its advanced 1/8 inch chainrings in 144 mm, and road with chainrings for Ultegra and Dura-Ace.
Hooked or pointed teeth, a chain that skips under load are signs of wear. A new chain skipping on the old chainring confirms this.
A compact double 50-34, or a 46-33 paired with a wide cassette, makes climbs more manageable than a 53-39. On a single chainring, a smaller chainring eases steep inclines at the cost of a shorter gear ratio on descents.
Yes, if the new one matches the spacing, number of speeds, and tooth count of the original. Align the peg of the outer chainring behind the crank, and change both if their teeth are worn in the same way.
It retains the date of the Friday following Thanksgiving; but for chainrings, Vélo-Store extends its discounts throughout November, enough time to count the teeth of your worn chainring before choosing.
Remove the crankset, then unscrew the chainring bolts, often with an Allen key on one side and a pin spanner on the other. Reassemble using the indicated torque, tightening in a cross pattern, then check the adjustment of the front derailleur.
